...we deeply regret inconvenience caused - Organisers
The planned walk to raise awareness and campaign against cultism and violence in Ugep, the headquarters of Yakurr local government area of Cross River State, scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2020, has been postponed.
In a press release signed by Mr. Obeten Godfrey, Team Lead, Coalition of 'Concerned' Ugep Youths stated that the postponement was due to perceived security threats and other unforeseen circumstances surrounding the event.
"The Coalition of 'Concerned' Ugep Youths deeply regret to announce that the peaceful "Walk Against Cultism" which was scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2020 will no longer be holding.
"This is due to perceived security threats and other unforeseen circumstances surrounding the event.
"It is sad to note that this development is coming less than twenty four hours to the rally, considering the level of energy and resources we have commited into this cause.
"We want to however reiterate that our stand as regards Cultism in Ugep is still on course, and as young people who have distinguished themselves and who look towards the future with zest and with the interest of our community at heart; we will continue to do our best and lend our voices against any misdeed that tends to truncate the development of our dear community.
"And to all well meaning Ugep sons and daughters, and every youth who have braced up for this walk, we apologise for this setback. We salute your energy, courage and desire to effect a positive change in our community. We implore you to keep the spirit high and not allow this to desuade you from contributing your quota to the development of our community whenever the need arises.
"We want to also state categorically without mincing words that the event will still be held, but on later date and same will be communicated through the appropriate quarters.
"Once again, we apologise for the inconvenience this postponement may have caused you."
Recall that the Special Assistant to the Governor on Security in Yakurr, Mr. Cyril Omini, had on Monday, July 21, issued a statement that the planned peaceful walk against cultism would not hold. According to him, the organisers of the event have not sort the official consent of his office and other relevant authorities before making such move.
"We cannot allow such a protest to take place because the organisers have not informed the appropriate authorities accordingly.
"We have the Leboku festival at hand and we cannot allow anything that will breach the peace of the area to take place."
