The state house of assembly has passed the bill for the establishment of the Quarry Regulatory and Environmental Monitoring Board.
The Bill as reported by the media directorate of the State House of Assembly was passed during plenary after the presentation of the report of the House committee on Petroleum and Environment by its Chairman, Hon. Elizabeth Ironbar who disclosed that 20 companies currently operate Quarry businesses in the state.
The committee chairman stated that, the activities of these companies while adding value to the economy often results in degradation of the State’s natural heritage and destruction of the environment adding that sadly, these companies have no reclamation plan for degraded areas, hence the urgent need for the establishment of a board to regulate their activities.
Hon Ironbar further emphasized that the Board will be empowered to ensure that Quarry Companies have approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before the establishment of any quarry in the state.
In separate contributions, while debating on the bill, members observed that the State will benefit immensely from the bill as it will not only greatly increase her revenue profile but also ensure the protection of the environment to guarantee the safety of human lives and wildlife for future generations.
The bill, which was sponsored by the Member representing Akampka 1 State Constituency, Hon Matthew Samuel Olory, passed through the required first and second readings before it was committed to the House Committee on Petroleum and Environment for it to interface with relevant stakeholders and make recommendations.
