The Department of Public Transportation has called on residents of Calabar to always use pedestrian bridges while crossing busy arras in the city.
Comrade Godwin Nyiam, the Director General of The Department who made this known on Saturday while addressing pedestrians at the University of Calabar minigate and Marian Market pedrdtrian bridge said careless crossing of roads in busy areas without using the pedestrians bridges contravenes traffic rules and offenders would be prosecuted.
Comrade Nyiam said the bridges were erected to be used and crossing the roads where the bridges are located is unacceptable.
"The bridges at Marian Market, Unical Mini gate, 8 Miles are all functional and those crossing one point of the road to the other where such brigades exist will no longer be accepted. The bridges should be used".
He said a team of his personnel would be stationed around such bridges to monitor and enforce use of the bridge"
Our role is to ensure safety of lives on our roads and we are going to live up to our mandate".
He called on all to get used to get use of pedestrian bridges to save themselves from the risk of being knocked down by vehicles and also being accosted by his operatives stationed around the bridges to ensure compliance.
