DPH NEWS Holds Webinar On Rape

In its fight against incessant rape in the country, a leading online media on move against Gender-Based Violence, DPH NEWS on Saturday held a webinar on rape.

The webinar, facilitated by Medupin Olusegun Paul of Youthhub Africa was on the topic 'Rape: a menace that shouldn't be blamed on victims.'

In his lecture, Medupin started by exposing over 250 trainers to different laws against rape in Nigeria.

He said: "Forget about what Google and the dictionary tell you about rape, rape is whatever the law says it is."

The four laws of rape in Nigeria were discussed which are the Criminal Code of Southern Nigeria, Penal code of Northern Nigeria, Criminal Laws of Lagos, Violence Against Person Prohibition Act, and the Child Rights Acts.

Talking about sex, Medupin said "for us humans, it's not so easy as media and TVs and Oyinbos will make you believe. Two people can injure one another if things escalate."

He further stated why rape victims shouldn't be blamed.

"What has dressing got to do with rape if a nine year old in a diaper can be raped?

"What has location got to do with rape if a lady can be raped and killed in church?

"What has body structure, size or shape got to do with then an eighty year old could still be rape?

"Rapists rape because they are rapists and what rapists do is to rape. And why? Because rapist rape and that's why they are rapist," said Paul.

Speaking with DPH NEWS after the training, Ridhwan Abdullahi Adetutu, one of the trainees described the training as a privilege to be a part of congregation of change seekers and those who have taken it upon themselves to be part of social reformation.

"I was open to new thoughts and insights as related to rape and its gory facts that has bedeviled our social space.

"The organizer, the moderator, as well as the trainer did a wonderful job. The trainer, with the aid of infographs was able to pass his impactful messages across.

"It was indeed a beneficial session and I don't regret ever being part of the virtual round table discussion," said Adetutu.
