CrossRiverDaily reported that, the committee earlier set up by the state government which is headed by the director general of the state Due process and price intelligence bureau, Barr Alphonsus Ogar Eba had on Thursday, August 15, alongside members of the committee, visited and held meetings with leaders and members of Okpoma and Okuku communities in yala.
The meetings which also had representatives from the State’s Ministry of Lands and also a team from the World Bank sponsored Agro Processing Productivity Enhancement And Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS), saw the indigenes of the communities embracing the project after been briefed of its eminent benefits.
Voiceofyala recalls that sometime in July 2019, when this scheme was first introduced by Gov Ayade, it was greeted with mixed feelings which led to the swift intervention of the State House Of Assembly and subsequent invitation of the committee set up by the governor for explanations and clarifications to the House. The House which later endorsed the scheme, urged the committee to engage the community leaders and members diligently.
The proposed 9,000 hectares of land is to be scouted for across the three senatorial districts(3,000hec per district), with yala been settled, it was learnt that the committee will be visiting other LGAs in the Northern Senatorial district where lands were mapped for acquisition for same project.
An undisclosed amount is said to have been agreed as compensation to the communities for the land. meanwhile the communities were handed a cash sum of N10(ten) million as compensation for previous portions of land acquired by the State government from them.
