Recalled that contract for Yahe-North Ukelle-Benue road which transverses a number of rural communities was awarded to Sydney Construction Company by the Cross River State Government in 2017.
But, in a motion before the House, Wednesday and which was also co- sponsored by Hon Regina Anyogo, the duo maintained that the poor road had rendered economic activities in the area dormant, which is in dire need of urgent help.
She said: "The poor inaccessible state of this critical rural road artery makes it difficult for farmers to transport their crops to the market," stressing that "essential farm inputs like fertilizers and other agro inputs that enhance improved crop yield is tied to the speedy rehabilitation of the road."
The motion which received unanimous applause by the Jones Eteng led state assembly captured the harrowing risk farmers bear in crop production which is higher than the return on investments and further doused the interest of prospective farmers in Ukelle.
"Poverty remains prominent in these rural agrarian communities because the risk and drudgery the farmers bear in cultivating their crops are much higher than the returns on their investments," she maintained.
While urging the Cross River State Government to urgently intervene in rehabilitating the Yahe-Wanokom-Wanihem-Benue Border Road to boost economic activities, Nkasi raised serious concerns on the menace of criminal elements that have taken advantage of the deplorable state of the road to unleash mayhem on commuters.
She stressed: "Criminal elements have taken advantage of the state of disrepair of the road to rob commuters of their valuables and sometimes with threats of kidnapping."
